Vegan Travel in Mexico City
This is Part One of Five: Vegan Travel in Mexico City.
I spent ten days in Mexico City in June 2022. And of course I fell in love with this vibrant city! As the largest city in North America, there is enough to do here for a whole YEAR, much less in just under ten days. I was working remotely planning a client’s virtual event, but I still managed to fit in plenty of vegan tacos, day adventures, and urban wanders.
Solo traveling for the first half of my trip, I was joined by my best friend Abby for the second part. I wanted to share a collection of my favorite things to do with you, so initially, I had all the vegan food, cocktails, day trips and adventures, and neighborhoods together in one (very) long blog post. But I decided to separate the post into five smaller articles to make it more digestible for you to read (no pun intended). So without further ado, here is part one of five: the food!
My Top Three Favorite Vegan Spots in Mexico City
Por Siempre Vegana 2
Por Siempre Vegana 2 Por Siempre means Forever Vegan. A gal can get behind that name. This is the brick-and-mortar location of a nearby popular food truck. They got so much business they opened this second, roomier, location with more menu and seating options.
I visited Por Siempre Vegana 2 multiple times; by myself at first, and then I brought Abby once she arrived. It’s my absolute favorite vegan food in Mexico City! The platter of five al pastor tacos is a highlight — grilled seitan topped with white onions, cilantro, and juicy pineapple wedges on a double bed of fresh corn tortillas. These were perfection. The tacos come with a tray of mild and hot sauces and fresh lime. Por Siempre Vegana 2 offers traditional dishes like tortas, tacos, chilaquiles, and pozole. And you can order a freshly brewed cup of Mexican coffee, made with cinnamon and sugar. It is hot, steamy, and sweet — so good.
Grab a spot at any open table inside or on the sidewalk, and a server will come out with menus and take your order. This spot gets crowded, and they run a waitlist at times. The service is usually friendly but slow. It can be slightly chaotic: one morning I came here during posted open hours, excited for breakfast – and hours that I had successfully visited the day prior – but they were still closed. Just not ready to open yet, I guess! Que sera sera!
Gold Taco Roma
A vegetarian taco stall with vegan options, Gold Taco Roma is located in the back of an indoor market. There are half a dozen stools along a countertop in the market and more tables on the sidewalk outside. The outside tables are for customers from any of the establishments in the market, so first come first served here. Order at the counter, and they’ll bring out your selection when it’s ready. The menu offers an extensive selection of tamales, tacos, quesadillas, and combination plates.
Note: Gold Taco Roma’s website has been hacked at the time of this writing, so here’s the link to their Happy Cow listing.
La Pitahaya Vegano
The neon colors in the food at La Pitahaya Vegano might make you think the food plays second fiddle to the gimmick, but the food is surprisingly flavorful and well-executed. La Pitahaya Vegano is bright and fun. ‘Pitaya’ is the native name for dragon fruit, which is the fruit infused into the corn tortillas and chips to imbue them with their ‘grammable pink color.
There are two locations, and I stumbled upon the lesser-visited one near the Coyoacán neighborhood. Head up the stairs and toward the back by the bay window to find this food stall. Order at the counter, and they’ll bring your meal out. The nachos were a delight; vibrant rainbow corn chips topped with tangy vegan cheese sauce, ‘meat’ crumbles, vegan sour cream, green onions, tomatoes, and purple cabbage.
Vegan travel in Mexico City is plentiful, affordable, and amazing! There are so many delicious places to eat, and I just barely scratched the surface. Maybe it’s time to plan a return trip? 🤔 I highly recommend checking out Por Siempre Vegana 2, Gold Taco Roma, and La Pitahyaya Vegano for some of the best vegan food. What do you want to try? Or if you’ve been, what are some of your favorite vegan spots?
